Landscaping Tips For Oklahoma Dry Seasons..

  • Choose drought-tolerant plants. When selecting plants for your Oklahoma landscape, be sure to choose those that are well-suited to dry conditions. Some good options include:

    • Buffalograss

    • Bluestem grasses

    • Russian sage

    • Yucca

    • Butterfly bush

    • Texas sage

    • Lavender

    • Rosemary

    • Sedum

  • Mulch around your plants. Mulch helps to conserve moisture in the soil, which can help your plants survive during dry spells. A good mulch option for Oklahoma is pine bark mulch.

  • Water your plants deeply and infrequently. When you do water your plants, be sure to water them deeply so that the water reaches the roots. Watering infrequently will help your plants develop deep roots, which will help them to better withstand dry conditions.

  • Avoid over-fertilizing your plants. Too much fertilizer can actually make plants more susceptible to drought stress. Instead, fertilize your plants lightly and only when necessary.

  • Inspect your plants regularly. During dry seasons, it is important to inspect your plants regularly for signs of stress. If you see any signs of wilting or browning leaves, water your plants immediately.
